SUSTAINABLE SOCIAL MODEL

We believe that people can live in harmony with nature when they are given an opportunity to live and farm differently.

WHY DOES KORAPUT COFFEE ® EXIST?

Tribal communities in Koraput District deserve a better deal.

Tribal communities rarely receive their fair share of the natural resources that bless their ancestral homelands.

The tribes who inhabit Koraput’s forests are no different.

With 25% of forest cover now lost to urbanization and industrialization, they live like leaves on the wind, forced to migrate or cut down more trees to survive.

A SMART SOLUTION TO A COMPLEX PROBLEM

Tribal farmers need a genuine alternative to podu farming.

As deforestation ushers in climate change, floods, drought, and soil erosion further impact farmers’ livelihoods forcing them further into debt.

Exploited by money lenders and middlemen, the complex problems they face demand holistic solutions from multi-disciplinary agencies acting with full government support.

Blessed with the soil and climatic conditions that are perfect for the cultivation of pure Arabica coffee, Koraput’s microclimate offers a unique opportunity.

PEOPLE PROSPER BY PLANTING TREES

We have changed the way we work together with tribal farmers.

Following meetings with the Coffee Board of India and the Odisha Government, we identified three critical success factors: the provision of land, the planting of shade trees, and direct market access.

Through targeted investment in processing and procurement, we have built a resilient pre-and-post harvest value chain in which people prosper by planting the trees they need to grow coffee.

Meeting their fuel needs by clearing fallen branches and diversifying their income by planting spices and fruit, coffee is binding communities together in harmony with the forest.
